Headaches and Migraines
How can Physiotherapy help with headaches?
Headaches, or migraines, are common and are a major cause of absenteeism and reduced productivity at work. In physiotherapy, headache treatment is based on a targeted approach, depending on the type (tension, cervicogenic, or migraines), aimed at addressing the underlying causes, whether muscular, articular, or postural.
What to expect during our sessions:
The physiotherapist assesses risk factors such as poor posture, muscle tension (trigger points), and joint dysfunctions in the cervical, cervicothoracic, and thoracic regions, as well as the temporomandibular joint.
Based on this assessment, a treatment plan is developed, including techniques such as joint mobilizations, strengthening and stretching exercises, and stress management approaches, all designed to reduce tension and improve posture, two key factors contributing to headaches.
In the case of cervicogenic headaches, the physiotherapist specifically targets the neck, mobilizing the cervical vertebrae and improving flexibility and/or stability in the region. In cases of trauma (concussion, accidents), the physiotherapist also treats musculoskeletal sequelae, thus reducing pain and the risk of headache exacerbation.
In summary, the physiotherapist plays a crucial role in addressing the root causes of headaches, relieving pain, and improving quality of life, while reducing their frequency and intensity and preventing recurrences.
